130 Days Alone at Sea. The Hardest Part Came After.
Rich Roll talks with sailor Cole Brauer, the first American woman to race solo and unassisted around the world, about breaking into an elite, male-dominated sport, surviving 130 days at sea, and why coming home was hardest.
The gist
-
Brauer finished second in the Global Solo Challenge after 130 days and just over 27,000 nautical miles, the youngest entrant and only woman.
-
Her boat was the first sailboat to go around the world successfully with Starlink, which let her post daily videos and call her shore team for repair help.
-
She chose to skip two huge storms near the Drake Passage, giving up the lead, and her meteorologist later told her she would have died otherwise.
-
Brauer says she won the Bermuda One Two by 90 miles by taking a risky route far off the direct line, because she had nothing to lose.
-
She says the hardest part was coming home to 30 hours of interviews, losing her sponsorship, and taking about two years to recover emotionally.
"So we were the first sailboat to go around the planet successfully with Starlink, and we had gotten a lot of slack for that in the beginning. I mean, the original Starlink, we called it the pizza box because it was so big."
